How to Find Your Author Voice
Your voice is the one thing no other writer can copy. Here's how to stop imitating and start sounding like you.
Your author voice is the fingerprint of your writing — the rhythm, vocabulary and perspective that makes your work unmistakably yours. Many new writers spend years imitating their heroes before realising their authentic voice was there all along.
The fastest way to find it is volume. Write often, write badly, and write without an audience in mind. Over time, the phrases you reach for naturally will surface. Notice what you obsess over, the metaphors you instinctively reach for, the way you describe light or tension or grief. That's your voice making itself known.
Then edit ruthlessly. Voice isn't permission to be lazy — it's the raw material you shape. Cut every sentence that sounds like someone else. Keep the ones only you would write. Do that a thousand times and your voice will be unmistakable.
